What is a real-time positioning system (RTLS)?

Real-time location system (RTLS) is a technology for tracking and locating objects, people or equipment in real-time by using wireless communications, sensors and data processing technology to provide accurate location information of objects in three-dimensional space. And it can also provide the location and movement information of the object in a very short time, and usually displayed on the monitoring system or user interface in real time. Its main core is a combination of hardware, software and communication technologies to determine and forward the real-time location of tagged items or people within a designated area of interest, leveraging the generated data in various ways depending on specific application requirements.

Components of an RTLS system

All RTLS applications consist of several basic components: a transponder, a receiver, and software for interpreting the data from each component. The complexity of the system, the selected technology, and the scope of the application will determine the amount of hardware and software required to create the ideal RTLS.

Transponder

A transponder is attached to an item or person in order to uniquely identify that item or person. The transponder usually receives a signal from the receiver and responds with its unique ID, but it can also send an initial signal if it contains an internal power supply. Depending on the technology type and application requirements, transponders can be: radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, Bluetooth beacons, smart devices, wireless network tags, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)/Global Positioning System (GPS) tags, ultrasonic tags , infrared tags, smart devices (depending on the mode);

Receiver

A receiver is a piece of hardware with a power supply connected to the network that is used to send and receive signals from the transponder. The receiver then forwards the collected data to the backend host or database. In some systems, the receiver can be existing infrastructure, but in other systems, the receiver must be purchased and incorporated into the application environment. Receivers can take various forms in practical applications, such as: location sensors, access points, receivers, beacons (depending on the mode), smart devices (depending on the mode), etc.;

Software

The software complexity in these systems varies from simple software integrated on the receiver hardware to multiple software instances such as positioning engine software, middleware, and application software on the host computer. Software can be combined to create the required functionality of the system. There are three main types used in RTLS applications: firmware - software that resides on the hardware, software or application software - software that resides on a back-end computer or server, and middleware - used to connect firmware and application software;

Application areas

  • Logistics and supply chain management: Used to track the location of goods, vehicles and equipment to improve logistics efficiency.

  • Indoor navigation: Provide navigation and location services in indoor environments, such as shopping malls, airports, hospitals, etc.

  • Manufacturing: For production line management, asset tracking and process control.

  • Healthcare: Used to track the location of medical equipment, patients and medical staff to improve hospital efficiency.

  • Security and Emergency Response: Used to monitor the location of personnel to ensure safety and respond quickly in emergency situations.

In short, RTLS can provide high-precision real-time positioning information and has wide applications in scenarios that require real-time tracking and management of object locations. It plays an important role in improving security, work efficiency and user experience.
